Earth Observation products and services for Vector Borne diseases
“Innovators III VecBorn” is part of the ESA programme DUE (Data User Element). “The project focuses to make full use of Sentinel-1 and -2 observations for the delineation of risk areas and to support the development of disease control measures for the vector borne diseases Tick Borne Encephalitis and Buruli Ulcer.” (ESA)
The objective of Vecborn is to develop satellite based methods for the delineation of risk areas and to support the development of disease control measures for 2 important vector borne diseases, for Tick Borne Encephalitis and for the skin disease Buruli Ulcer. The spread and incidence of both diseases is increasing and thousands of people become infected and die every year.
In the frame of Vecborn JOP will develop new satellite processing and statistical analysis tools and integrate the new tools into the GEOclassifier SW toolbox.
JOP developed the project approach together with 2 user organisations the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) in Berlin, Germany for TBE, and the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (SWISS TPH) in Basel, Switzerland for Buruli Ulcer.
VecBorn is using as much as possible the new free available Sentinel 1 and 2 satellite data and develops new methods to exploit the full advantage of the Sentinels, in particular the high repetition rate and the high spatial and radiometric resolution. The radar data of S1 are cloud independent and facilitate together with S2 data the development of reliable methods and repeatable products. In addition free available satellite derived products will be integrated mainly into national scale investigations, such as CCI Land Cover products or MODIS Land Surface Temperature (LST) data.
